WINEMAKER’S NOTES

We blend fruit from climatically diverse growing regions including Lodi and Paso Robles. This helps us achieve more complexity and intriguing nuances. Lodi fruit in particular benefits from temperature differentials where extremely warm daytime weather is offset by cool afternoon breezes from the delta.

Zinfandel gives us sweet, juicy flavors, intense aromatics, and lovely spice qualities. Syrah provides this blend with color, a lush texture, and sweet black berry fruit flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon helps provide structure, weight and red fruit flavors.

Despite tricky weather in 2008, where excessively cold temperatures reduced the size of the crop, the Syrah and Grenache harvested for this wine was intensely concentrated because the vines were able to send all of their energy and nutrients to a smaller amount of fruit. As of last year, we’ve been able to include estate-grown Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend, which also includes Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, Sonoma, and El Dorado counties. Francis Coppola Diamond Pinot Grigio 2008 -- Winemaker’s NotesPopularized in Northern Italy where seafood is abundant, Pinot Grigio is a varietal that requires a temperate climate and delicate handling. Our Pinot Grigio is grown in California’s cool climate appellations, where the grape performs its best. Picked in the early morning hours, fermented at cold temperatures and finished in stainless steel, Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Pinot Grigio is bright and crisp with an accent of minerals.The 2008 vintage was tricky across California—severe spring frost damaged the vineyards and a heat wave in late August prompted harvest to begin a few weeks early. On the upside of this, the frost that occurred early in the year diminished the overall fruit yield. Having less fruit on the vines meant that the grapes that remained had more flavor concentration because the vines didn’t need to nourish as much fruit. So, in spite of uncooperative weather, our Pinot Grigio delivers good body and balance and beautifully aromatic fruit flavors . . .

Francis Coppola Diamond Pinot Noir 2007 -- What is the character of the Diamond Pinot Noir? Click here to see what winemaker Corey Beck has to say. Winemaker’s Notes Our Pinot Noir grapes are harvested in the early morning hours, crushed, and then cold soaked for 48 hours to elicit color and aromas. During fermentation, the grapes are punched down four times a day to intensify flavors and extract tannin. Then, the wine is aged in small French oak barrels. Monterey experienced an outstanding 2007 season. Budbreak occurred later than normal due to a cold winter; however, in spite of the chilly temperatures there was little precipitation. As a result, the vines were not vigorous and produced fewer and smaller fruit clusters. The benefit of having reduced amounts of fruit is that the grapes become tremendously concentrated. In addition to having well-endowed flavor, the fruit is nicely balanced by a crisp acidity. Our 2007 Pinot Noir is not only dark and bigger bodied, it displays a rich perfume and delivers long, intense flavors. . . .

To create a light, fresh Sauvignon Blanc that displays intense fruit flavors and exceptional balance, we source grapes from three different appellations. Grapes that come from Napa give us juicy tropical fruit flavors, the Alexander Valley fruit provides a solid backbone of citrus, while Mendocino grapes contribute to the luscious aromatics in our wine. Francis Coppola Diamond Syrah-Shiraz 2007 -- Who came up with the name "Syrah-Shiraz"? Click here to find out. Winemaker’s NotesOur unique Syrah-Shiraz is sourced from three specific vineyards in the Central Coast and blended with small amounts of Petite Sirah so that it’s extremely dark and lush.From San Lucas, we get extremely supple fruit that undergoes a particularly longripening period due to sloping southeastern vineyards which experience fewer hours of intense daily sunlight. This fruit contributes a high level of concentration and intense blackberry aromas. The grapes harvested from our Paso Robles vineyard, on the other hand, provide red raspberry flavors and a velvety texture. We also add a small amount of Petite Sirah from Hames Valley for heightened depth and structure.Upon harvest, the grapes are de-stemmed; however, a portion of the stems are later added to the fermentation tank, which is a winemaking technique that imparts a white pepper aroma. After a 48-hour cold soak to extract color, the must is heated to 90° . . .

Why try Viognier? Viognier is a French Rhône wine varietal that is quickly rising to the top as an American favorite and California is its newest realm with about 2000 acres planted. And, as WinePros.com puts it, "Both Chardonnay and Viognier share tropical fruit flavors and a creamy mouthfeel. Director's Cut Chardonnay 2007 -- Hear what winemaker Corey Beck has to say about the Director's Cut Chardonnay! Click here for a video clip. The Chardonnay is 100% Russian River Valley, an area shaped by a regular intrusion of cooling fog from the Pacific Ocean a few miles to the west. This cools the valley down from its daytime high temperatures by as much as 35 to 40 degrees, allowing Chardonnay grapes to develop full flavor maturity over an extended growing season—often 15 to 20 percent longer than neighboring areas—while retaining their all-important natural acidity. 100% barrel fermented. We crush our Russian River Chardonnay whole-cluster and then ferment entirely in French oak barrels to achieve a silky, seductive texture.
