Sam’s Vineyard

Alexander Valley is comprised of varied terrain, from mountains that are exposed to full and abundant sunlight, to the valley floor in the south, which is cooler and highly influenced by maritime weather conditions. Alluvial soils run the length of the valley, and many vineyards are punctuated by sedimentary stones, which retain heat and transfer warmth to the vines even when the sun cannot. Additionally, the fruit from this diverse appellation typically demonstrates great concentration and flavor. Sam’s Vineyard is situated in the eastern hillsides of the appellation on an extremely steep mountain-vineyard composed of rocky, clay loam soils. Because the grapes reside at a higher elevation, there is less disparity between day and nighttime temperatures. This condition allows for greater phenolic and flavor development in the fruit.

The Wine

We experienced an enduring 2006 vintage that included warm weather and virtually no precipitation in the weeks leading up to our November harvest. As a result, this wine demonstrates tremendous complexity, soft, supple tannins and a refined character, which we develop with specialized fermentation techniques, Bordeaux-style barrels and racking that occurs during the initial maturation period. Our 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a rich tapestry of flavors and aromas including black raspberries, cherries, chocolate, rum raisin, and spice. Barbecued lamb chops, cheese soufflé and pot roast with potatoes make for sumptuous pairings.

3 Liter Diamond Merlot -- The Coppola family purchased the Sonoma winery in March, making it possible for us to crush right here on the premises  when  harvest  was  upon  us.  Having  our  very  own  winemaking  facility not only  heightens  the  quality  of  our  wines,  it  fills  us  with  a  sense of  pride  and accomplishment,  and  fulfills  our  longtime  goal  of  being  able  to  give  our  hallmark Diamond wines a home. WINEMAKER’S NOTES With Merlot, the objective is to create a wine that has structure and complexity, but soft, smooth tannins. We find that sourcing fruit from several different appellations works best to give us a Merlot which exudes multiple layers of flavors and a nice seductive texture. Francis Coppola Reserve Petite Sirah Dessert Wine 2006 -- 100% Ruby's Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley! The Varietal Petite Sirah is a powerhouse red grape that makes dark, inky wines that are peppery, heavy on the tannin and chock full of delicious blackberry flavors. Because of its heady nature, this varietal is ideal for producing a Port-style wine, which is produced by stopping fermentation while there is still sugar left in the wine and then adding grape brandy to the tank. The resulting wine becomes higher in alcohol, as you may well imagine, and well suited for aging. Ports made from Petite Sirah typically offer juicy flavors of baked blackberry pie, sugared plums and sweet black cherries as well as notes of dark chocolate and seasoned wood.
