Director's Merlot 2007 History

Several years ago when the Coppola family opened the doors to its wine and food destination in Sonoma County, California, the winemaking team was asked to create a series of wines that would reflect its own artistic interpretation of the region.

The winemakers decided to produce two separate collections in order to showcase Sonoma County as one of the premier wine growing regions of the world. The first—Director’s Cut—offers limited production wines grown in the distinct sub-appellations of Sonoma, small areas that produce specific terroir traits we like. The second—Director’s—is comprised of four classic varietals grown in diverse vineyards across the entire expanse of Sonoma County.

By blending fruit from a variety of geographic climates, we’re able to create wines that offer lush, ripe fruit flavors, a light, silky texture, and soft, supple tannins. This year marks our debut release of Director’s— wines that demonstrate Sonoma County’s unique character and style.

Vintage

The 2007 vintage was as close to perfect as possible. An unusually dry winter gave way to a warm, dry spring, which significantly reduced the crop size. Conditions such as these typically produce very highly concentrated grapes. Because there were no periods of intense heat during the summer months, the fruit matured slowly and evenly. As a result, wines from this vintage are profusely aromatic, exceptionally well-balanced, and highly flavorful.

Winemaker Notes

Even though Merlot is a sturdy grape that thrives in many environments, it must be harvested at precisely the right moment and finessed in the cellar so that it doesn’t become flabby or overly ripe in flavor. Director’s Merlot is made from Clones 3 & 9. Neither of these selections, even in warm years, take on raisin-like flavors; they just become intensely fruity. Clone 3 grapes contribute traditional plum flavors and lushness while Clone 9 is dense, deeply colored, and more tannic. When we blend these Merlot selections together, we create a perfectly balanced wine.

Tasting Notes

Our Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Merlot is a rich, ripe and expressive wine due to its powerful fruit character. It displays a soft, velvety texture and succulent flavors of plum, blueberries, cocoa and spice. A perfect accompaniment to barbecued chicken pizza, pot roast, or a spinach salad with mustard vinaigrette.

Francis Coppola Diamond Petite Sirah Francis Coppola Diamond Petite Sirah -- The Francis Coppola Diamond Collection began in 1997 as an ambitious endeavor to make wines of character and complexity at an affordable price.   Sourced from California vineyards that not only have proven track records but are also managed according to our rigorous standards, Diamond Collection wines are classic California expressions that offer fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability.   Our illustrious lineup includes eleven single-varietal wines, plus our flagship red proprietary blend, Claret. These wines are a true labor of love—we invite you to share them with us. Winemaker’s Notes My grandfather, John Rolleri, was a Napa Valley grape grower back when the California wine industry was just gaining notoriety. His favorite grape was Petite Sirah, and because it had been a passion of his, I, too, developed a fondness for the varietal. Once I became a winemaker, I sought out prime Petite Sirah vineyards, and started experimenting with different . . .

Our fruit is sourced from vineyards that not only have proven track records but are also managed according to our rigorous standards. The illustrious Diamond Collection lineup now includes twelve single-varietal wines, plus our flagship proprietary blends. All demonstrate fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability. These wines are a true labor of love—we invite you to share them with us. Winemaker’s NotesFrom its inception, the Diamond Collection was designed to showcase pure, authentic varietal expressions from the best vineyard sites across California. Our new Tempranillo, however, is a departure from this mission because the fruit was grown in the Navarra region of Spain, which is just north of Rioja. We are extremely fond of this varietal, but have been unable to find domestic vineyards that produce the quality of fruit . . .

Francis Coppola Diamond Zinfandel Francis Coppola Diamond Zinfandel -- Why do we add Petite Syrah to our Diamond Zinfandel? Click here to have winemaker Corey Beck tell you why. Winemaker’s NotesOur Diamond Zinfandel is an expression of several unique appellations and one incredible vintage. From our Hog’s Canyon vineyard in Paso Robles comes fruit that was highly concentrated as a result of dry summer temperatures that exceeded 95ºF. At the other end of the appellation, we sourced from a vineyard comprised of gravely clay loam soils similar to those of Australia’s Barossa Valley. This fruit was blended with grapes from our Sonoma County vineyards, which typically provide very high-quality fruit that ripens evenly and exudes immense character and flavor. Finally, we added an extra layer of complexity by blending in a small amount of Petite Sirah. The resulting wine has a solid structure and mature tannins to give balance to Zinfandel’s inherently “jammy” nature.Tasting ProfileAppearance: Deep purple garnetAromas: Strawberry jam, briary blackberries, toasted . . .

Reserve Cabernet 2006 & Riedel Glassware Gift Collection Reserve Cabernet 2006 & Riedel Glassware Gift Collection -- This gift set includes one bottle of 2006 Francis Coppola Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and a pair of Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glasses. The foam interior of the box is custom-cut to ensure your gift ships safely and is presented perfectly upon opening.   Austria's Riedel is the world's premier manufacturer of wine glasses. Made of 24-percent lead crystal, the Vinum series of glasses are the first machine-made wine glasses to be developed uniquely for each type of wine. This stem pairs exceptionally well with robust, Bordeaux-style varietals such as our Reserve Cabernet. About the Wine: Sam’s Vineyard Alexander Valley is comprised of varied terrain, from mountains that are exposed to full and abundant sunlight, to the valley floor in the south, which is cooler and highly influenced by maritime weather conditions. Alluvial soils run the length of the valley, and many vineyards are punctuated by sedimentary stones, which retain heat and transfer warmth to the vines even when the sun cannot. . . .

The Cabernet Collection The Cabernet Collection -- This is an exquisite collection for those who enjoy a variety of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Francis Coppola Reserve Cabernet 2006 is 100% Cabernet and is our 1st Sam's Vineyard designate in the Alexander Valley. It is aged 19 months in new French & American oak, creating a rich tapestry of flavors and aromas, including black raspberries, cherries, chocolate, rumraisin, and spice. The Director's Cut Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 is also from the Alexander Valley, and was aged 24 months in new and used French oak, delivering aromas of cola, cherry, and eucalyptus before revealing dark, rich berries, cassis and black cherries. The Diamond Collection Ivory Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 combines fruit from appellations as far north as El Dorado and as far south as Paso Robles. You'll find a rich color, intense aromatics, and an exceptional concentration of flavors that linger on the finish.

Francis Coppola Diamond Alicante Bouschet Francis Coppola Diamond Alicante Bouschet -- Since its inception, the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection has been an expansive endeavor to create consistently high-quality wines that are pure expressions of each varietal. We seek out vineyard sites across California, which ensure superior grapes year-after-year, and we employ precise winemaking techniques to showcase the true character of our fruit. This enterprise has become a true labor of love. We invite you to share it with us. Winemaker’s Notes During the years of Prohibition, there were legal loopholes that allowed families to procure grapes and make limited quantities of table wine. Most of the fruit was varietals we consider rare today, but they offered wonderfully unique tasting experiences that many recall with great nostalgia. As a child, Francis Coppola’s grandfather made homemade wine using Alicante Bouschet grapes shipped in by train. Some years back, Mr. Coppola expressed a yearning for that unique varietal he grew up with, so we traveled about and tasted grapes . . .

Francis Coppola Diamond Malbec Francis Coppola Diamond Malbec -- Winemaker’s NotesAlthough Malbec is not all that well-known in the U.S., it is common to blend small amounts of this varietal into Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. In fact, this has been the tradition of great Bordeaux wines for centuries. More recently, Malbec has become Argentina’s most famous wine export, bottled as its own impressive single-varietal wine.Malbec is less tannic than Cabernet, but more so than Merlot, giving it a powerful structure but more immediate drinkability. Our Malbec was grown in several coastal vineyards, which experience an abundance of afternoon sun, little wind, and well-drained soils. Similar to Cabernet, this varietal exudes rich, dark fruit flavors of cherry and cassis, but there is an inherent note of minerality that makes it distinctly different. This quality, coupled with French oak aging, underscores the fruit with an alluring spice element all its own.Tasting ProfileAppearance: MagentaAromas: Plums, licorice, earthy mineral tonesFlavors: Cherry, . . .

Francis Coppola Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 Francis Coppola Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 -- The Label To commemorate the special nature of these wines, our bottles feature a distinct label design. Six different playful configurations of letters, which comprise the Coppola name, were created by, literally, tossing 3-dimensional pieces of type into the air and capturing them in flight. Each is a one-of-a-kind expression as prized as the wine in the bottle. Sam’s Vineyard Alexander Valley is comprised of varied terrain, from mountains that are exposed to full and abundant sunlight, to the valley floor in the south, which is cooler and highly influenced by maritime weather conditions. Alluvial soils run the length of the valley, and many vineyards are punctuated by sedimentary stones, which retain heat and transfer warmth to the vines even when the sun cannot. Francis Coppola Reserve Pinot Noir 2008 Francis Coppola Reserve Pinot Noir 2008 -- This Reserve Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley hails from Dutton Ranch, a unique vineyard where both red and white grapes flourish. For this vintage, Pinot Noir from Dutton Ranch was the prominent stand out for our Reserve collection. The vineyard is located near the Pacific Ocean and experiences fog nearly every afternoon. Not only does this condition serve to lower ambient temperatures by 30-40 degrees in the evening, it works perfectly to slow down the ripening process so that grapes can accumulate flavor concentration by maturing over a longer period of time. This smooth, silky Pinot offers seductive AROMAS of rose petals and ripe red cherries along with generous FLAVORS of crushed raspberries, blackberries, and fragrant spices. Wonderful with seasoned pork tenderloin, roast beef with wild mushrooms, or fettuccine with Italian sausage and cream sauce. Blend: 100% Pinot Noir; Alcohol: 14.5%.Aged: 8 months in French oak50% new, 50% 1 year

Francis Coppola Reserve Syrah 2007 Francis Coppola Reserve Syrah 2007 -- Click here to see a video clip of winemaker Corey Beck discuss the Reserve wines. Australians have made the varietal incredibly popular (under the name "Shiraz"), but here in California, we do the grape justice too! Mounts Vineyard Located on the western benchlands of northern Dry Creek Valley, Mounts Vineyard xperiences cool, foggy mornings and rather hot days. Because there is a substantial difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, the growing season lasts longer, so the grapes mature more slowly. This, along with a high level of organic material in the alluvial silt and clay loam soils, accentuates the jammy, dark fruit flavors of Syrah. The Wine As is traditional in France, the 2006 Francis Coppola Reserve Mounts Vineyard Syrah is co-fermented with a small percentage of Viognier to lift the aromatics and help set this varietal’s bright magenta color. Enjoy an enticing perfume of blackberries, currants, leather and spice. Generous flavors of raspberries and black plums . . .

Francis Coppola Reserve Petite Sirah Dessert Wine 2006 Francis Coppola Reserve Petite Sirah Dessert Wine 2006 -- 100% Ruby's Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley! The Varietal Petite Sirah is a powerhouse red grape that makes dark, inky wines that are peppery, heavy on the tannin and chock full of delicious blackberry flavors. Because of its heady nature, this varietal is ideal for producing a Port-style wine, which is produced by stopping fermentation while there is still sugar left in the wine and then adding grape brandy to the tank. The resulting wine becomes higher in alcohol, as you may well imagine, and well suited for aging. Ports made from Petite Sirah typically offer juicy flavors of baked blackberry pie, sugared plums and sweet black cherries as well as notes of dark chocolate and seasoned wood. The Wine Our Petite Sirah is grown in Dry Creek Valley. This appellation has a diversity of microclimates and soil variations, which enables it to accommodate many different grape varietals. Director's Cut Zinfandel 2007 Director's Cut Zinfandel 2007 --   Recommended by Peter Gianotti of New York NEWSDAY as a "very good wine deal". Dry Creek Valley There are two methodologies for growing Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley. One consists of traditional farming practices, which includes the dry-farming of head-trained, spur-pruned vines, that are quite mature and severely thinned in the spring to produce low yields. The other employs more modern methods, including bilateral cordon, spur-pruned on-wire trellising, drop irrigation, and carefully manicured canopies. We source our Zinfandel grapes from vineyards on the benchlands and hillsides, which are farmed both ways. The combination of the area’s climate, our vineyard sites, and the two types of the farming methods used produces excellent fruit with intensely concentrated flavor. Vintage profile The 2007 vintage was a winemaker’s dream, and, quite possibly, the vintage of a lifetime. An unusually dry winter gave way to a warm , dry spring, which significantly reduced the crop size. . . .

Francis Coppola Diamond Merlot Francis Coppola Diamond Merlot -- Why does winemaker Corey Beck add Syrah to our Diamond Merlot? Click here to find out. With Merlot, the objective is to create a wine that has structure and complexity, but soft, smooth tannins. We find that sourcing fruit from several different appellations works best to give us a Merlot that exudes multiple layers of flavor and a nice seductive texture. We also blend in small amounts of Syrah and Petite Sirah to achieve a richer color.Grapes that come from Napa provide weight, sweet fruit flavors and the intense aromatics of fresh berries while the Sonoma fruit contributes natural acidity to create more balance and finesse. Monterey County grapes provide concentration; a result of the well-drained sandy loam soils that characterize the region. Winemaker’s NotesWe pick our Pinot Noir in the early morning hours and bring the fruit inside for immediate crush and 48 hours of cold soak. Francis Coppola Diamond Syrah-Shiraz Francis Coppola Diamond Syrah-Shiraz -- Who came up with the name "Syrah-Shiraz"? Click here to find out. Winemaker’s NotesOur unique Syrah-Shiraz is sourced from three specific vineyards in the Central Coast and blended with small amounts of Petite Sirah so that it’s extremely dark and lush. From San Lucas, we get extremely supple fruit that undergoes a particularly long ripening period due to sloping southeastern vineyards which experience fewer hours of intense daily sunlight. This fruit contributes a high level of concentration and intense blackberry aromas. The grapes harvested from our Paso Robles vineyard, on the other hand, provide red raspberry flavors and a velvety texture. We also add a small amount of Petite Sirah from Hames Valley for heightened depth and structure.Upon harvest, the grapes are de-stemmed; however, a portion of the stems are later added to the fermentation tank, which is a winemaking technique that imparts a white pepper aroma. After a 48-hour cold soak to extract color, the must is heated to 90° . . .
