About the Wine:

Francis Coppola Diamond Black Label Claret

As of last year, we’ve been able to include estate-grown Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the blend, which also includes Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, Sonoma, and El Dorado counties. The small amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot we add help to strengthen color, weight, and structure.

Our Claret is always elegant, but this year it’s a true show stopper; lush with a beautiful tapestry of smooth tannins, intense flavor, and seductive aromas. When paired with classic dishes such as beef stroganoff, leg of lamb or potato gratin, you can create a sublime dining experience.

Francis Coppola Diamond Pavilion Black Label Chardonnay

Pavilion, the white blend counterpart to our popular Claret, is reminiscent of a Chardonnay and Viognier blend we used to make at our Napa property. Always well received, this wine was quite elegant and complex in nature. With this model for Pavilion, we went in search of prime Chardonnay and Viognier vineyards for this blend.

The Chardonnay for this wine hails from the Santa Lucia Highlands, which is a unique high-elevation sub-appellation of Monterey County. The vineyards rest 300 to 400 feet above sea level and are comprised of sandy loam soils. In addition to regular morning fog and afternoon breezes, the nighttime temperature in these vineyards can be as much as 30° lower than the daytime temperature. This creates a very slow, even ripening process and subsequently leads to extremely concentrated fruit with good dimension. To add a unique character and intriguing notes of flowers and spices, we blend in a highly aromatic source of Viognier from Russian River Valley.

In the cellar, we whole-cluster press before the initial fermentation and then we induce malolactic fermentation in order to heighten the rich, creamy texture of the Chardonnay. The Viognier, on the other hand, is finished in stainless steel in order to retain the varietal’s wonderful perfume, silky texture, and juicy tropical fruit flavors.

The wines are then blended, with a majority placed in a combination of new and used French oak. Our debut vintage of Pavilion offers excellent body and beautifully aromatic fruit flavors that pair perfectly with crab cakes, ginger chicken, or curried butternut squash soup.

Francis Coppola Reserve Pinot Noir 2008 -- This Reserve Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley hails from Dutton Ranch, a unique vineyard where both red and white grapes flourish. For this vintage, Pinot Noir from Dutton Ranch was the prominent stand out for our Reserve collection. The vineyard is located near the Pacific Ocean and experiences fog nearly every afternoon. Not only does this condition serve to lower ambient temperatures by 30-40 degrees in the evening, it works perfectly to slow down the ripening process so that grapes can accumulate flavor concentration by maturing over a longer period of time. This smooth, silky Pinot offers seductive AROMAS of rose petals and ripe red cherries along with generous FLAVORS of crushed raspberries, blackberries, and fragrant spices. Wonderful with seasoned pork tenderloin, roast beef with wild mushrooms, or fettuccine with Italian sausage and cream sauce. Francis Coppola Reserve Petite Sirah Dessert Wine 2006 -- 100% Ruby's Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley! The Varietal Petite Sirah is a powerhouse red grape that makes dark, inky wines that are peppery, heavy on the tannin and chock full of delicious blackberry flavors. Because of its heady nature, this varietal is ideal for producing a Port-style wine, which is produced by stopping fermentation while there is still sugar left in the wine and then adding grape brandy to the tank. The resulting wine becomes higher in alcohol, as you may well imagine, and well suited for aging. Ports made from Petite Sirah typically offer juicy flavors of baked blackberry pie, sugared plums and sweet black cherries as well as notes of dark chocolate and seasoned wood. The Wine Our Petite Sirah is grown in Dry Creek Valley. This appellation has a diversity of microclimates and soil variations, which enables it to accommodate many different grape varietals. Francis Coppola Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 -- The Label To commemorate the special nature of these wines, our bottles feature a distinct label design. Each is a one-of-a-kind expression as prized as the wine in the bottle. Mounts Vineyard Located on the western benchlands of northern Dry Creek Valley, Mounts Vineyard xperiences cool, foggy mornings and rather hot days. Because there is a substantial difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, the growing season lasts longer, so the grapes mature more slowly.
